Carnival (Mardi Gras to most Americans) had it's first gay float in the parade, very nice. We have found it to be un-important to us as far as negativity. We've meet a few gay couples. The store "MaLi furniture" has an art walk every month and several people show up for the art walk and we've meet some nice couples (same sex) there. There are a few bars ( I think 3 or 4) you can go to. We bought our house in the community and not in the resort area as I wanted to be immeresed in the language. There is a smaller house down the street (ours is 2 bds and 2 1/2 bath) for sale as well, $140,000.00 We LOVE Mazatlan, so much to do.
