On our first trip to Maz, we spent hours with a wonderful couple at the Shrimp Bucket - they're here, too - Greg and Dianne. a wealth of info. nothing to keep us from coming back. In fact they have a son our daughter's age. This time we're staying upstairs from the same restaurant at La Siesta. I chose it cheifly for the location so close to the downtown. We're looking for the square, and marketplace to be nearby (walking) where we choose. Although it's our nature to want to purchase first to have something of our own, it is likely wiser to rent in any location to get a better awareness of the long term effects of the move. It used to be that the buy would be a good investment anyway, but anymore I'm not so sure.
I'm the one who can speak a bit of spanish, four years in high school 30+ years ago, but my daughter is catching up quickly. which isn't saying we're fluent by any means. My wife, susan is quite able in most regards, but communicates more with her hands than her words. She's the one that spent years overseas in the military, not me. Mostly Germany. and Japan.
I took few pictures while there off the cruise ship January 1, and those just the cathedral and the Olas Altas views that you can see anywhere, I'll do more this next time, a week from Thursday.

Temporarily moving to Mexico and learning the area sounds like a great idea. If the opportunity arises that will be my first option. For now, perusing the websites is probably my best option along with a few vacations (scouting missions). I may have mentioned before that I intend on a vacation to Mexico this summer to experience the heat/humidity and look for property.
As intolerable as the heat may actually get in some areas of Mexico, the idea of too much heat here in 10 degree F. Wisconson seems impossible. Just FYI, I now have snow pile areas along my driveway that are 5'-6' tall...Mexico 1, Wisconson 0!
Greg, I got curious about where Las Gavias was since you have a profile on a Mazatlan website. One online map shows Las Gavias about midway between Tampico and San Luis Potosi, but in my Google search I saw references to the Baja peninsula as well. Which one are you?

The one thing I have heard and seen is that locals will wait forever to sell a house in order to get their price (whatever that is). It is not uncommon to see a house for sale for a year or two.

Recently, I have seen price reductions as the economy is starting to impact everyone. My best advice is to get a good realtor that you trust and can work with. Buying a house here is very different than up north and you really need someone experienced to educate you.

Many ex-pats recommend that you come and rent for six months or so to be sure that Mazatlan is right for you and to learn the neighborhoods to determine your ideal place to live. I would agree with this if it is feasable. We could not do that, but having come to Mazatlan for over 15 years and having some national friends to help us, we felt pretty comfortable with our decision.

I have seen a few people buy and then leave and they lose a lot of money in the process. There are some good websites out there to learn from others who have gone through the experience. I think rollybrook's site is good and I even like MazInfo on Yahoo Groups despite all the in-fighting.
