Working (legally) is not very easy for foreigners in Mexico. As in the US, you will need an employer to help you get the right visa. About the only industry that does that is the timeshare sales industry, which needs a regular supply of Americans to prey on their victims. Sorry I can't be more encouraging.
Best wishes,

I knew i had seen something about this somewhere else, and i finally came across it again.

Jennifer, in her blog at Mexscape, shares the story of how she and her husband were able to obtain legal permission to run their own business in Mazatlan. It wasn't an easy or quick process by any means, but it is possible if that's what you really want. The blog post is very informative, and it seems to me that Jennifer is very accessible for any other information you might need!

Hope that helps!

Hey Larry... working in Mexico is a tough question... Do you want the legal answer or the realistic answer?

if you are currently working for a company that is in Mexico you can move there and they can file paperwork to make it ok. I assume thats not the case though. Mexican law says you can't work in Mexico if you're taking a job from a Mexican. Meaning that if there is a Mexican available that can do the work they get the job over you.

A lot depends on what you want to do for "work" if you're looking for a professional job you're going to want to play by the rules. If you just want to head to Mexico and pick up a job to help you stay in the black then a lot of people turn to working under the table. Not unlike here in the US people are able to find work from everything from teaching english as a second language to delivering food.

Here are some resources that may help:

Talking to project managers, contractors and foreigners who are working here there are mixed answers. A conversation with "Immigracion" yielded different answers again. But, read this:

At the same time skilled construction people are being recruited. Please remember there are many local people who are very well educated, perhaps with limited English skills, who are looking for a better job. Your competition.
